Desc: Armados: Directed by Rodrigo Mac Niven. Brazil, despite her not being in a state of war and not reporting civil conflict, is the world champion in absolute numbers of deaths from firearms. This was the surprising conclusion of the World Health Organization in its latest study on the subject which, after all, leads people to think on the impact of these weapons on health and human rights, of the average Brazilian citizen and raises a fundamental question: should armed violence be seen as an inevitable fact in modern times or as a phenomenon that can be prevented and controlled, seen through the lenses of public health, one that needs to be grasped in all of its extent? The documentary Armed discusses the role that firearms have in Brazilian society and their relevance in the scenario of violence in large urban centres. It also creates debate on the production of ammo, the logics of war that fuels the weapons market and the importance of a culture of peace as a mechanism to reduce the numbers in violence, especially in large city centres. Rio de Janeiro, a city whose Police are the one that kills and dies the most in the world, get the spotlights in this debate. The documentary gives the testimonies of several representatives of this stage; the ammunition manufacturer, the Police officer, the civilian who buys and bears arms, and the victims. In its attempt to value dialectics as a path to understand it, the film aims at bringing knowledge and information, to allow a richer and more honest debate on a fundamental subject.
